Formula
Bricks per m³ = 1 / ((brick length + joint) × (brick width + joint) × (brick height + joint)). Wet mortar = brickwork volume − total brick volume. Dry mortar = wet × 1.33, split by the mix ratio; one cement bag = 0.035 m³.
Standard / source
Standard estimating practice for masonry quantities: the 1.33 dry-to-wet volume factor and the 0.035 m³ cement bag are the conventional site-estimating figures. Confirm brick size and mix against the project specification.
Worked example
1 m³ of brickwork, 190 × 90 × 90 mm bricks with a 10 mm joint: bricks = 1 / (0.20 × 0.10 × 0.10) = 500. Wet mortar = 1 − 500 × 0.19 × 0.09 × 0.09 ≈ 0.231 m³; dry mortar ≈ 0.307 m³. At 1:6, cement ≈ 0.307/7/0.035 ≈ 1.25 bags and sand ≈ 0.263 m³.
Safety note
Ordering estimate only — it does not check wall stability, loading or masonry design. Measure the bricks actually delivered, since size varies, and allow for openings, piers and breakage.
